I remembered that he had been a session drummer for Mack as well as James Brown. I met him only briefly at his mothers home in Covington, Kentucky in the late 80's. He seemed like a nice, shy fellow. He had a difficult life and suffered bouts of severe mental illness that seemed to be schizophrenia- though I don't know if he was ever diagnosed. I did not know until today that he died in 2011. I listened to many of his records today on youtube and he was quite talented. I remember listening to one of his old 45's back in the 80's, "Any Day Now" and thinking it was better than the top 40 hit. But thats show-biz. So many talented people and the vast majority never hit it big. And his story was very tragic, almost cruel how he went from a highly respected and well liked musician on the apparent cusp of stardom and national fame to a person disabled by mental illness. He is my father and I know he is sitting at the bar upstairs with friends and colleagues writing music on cocktail napkins, all the while scratching the side of his beard, the way he always did while figuring out where to put what melody and verse. He was a very talented man and your story helped bring me a little closer to knowing him as we were distanced at an early age. Many thanks, you are a fine writer and I really love that you are exposing the music industry history for us all to consume and understand its inner workings. Be well and CARPE DIEM! When we got there Beau Dollar and the Coins were playing. We used their equipment for our audition (we did get hired). Talk about intimidating - having to follow those guys. They were like Gods to us and I went to see Beau's groups play whenever I knew he was at a club. Seeing The Dapps at The Inner Circle (now Bogarts) was the best of the sampling that I heard.Horse Attack Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10093057836969619710noreply@blogger.com
